About Gibson Flying V Electric Guitars

The Flying V along with Futura (Explorer) and initially, the Moderne, make up the modern line of guitars designed by then Gibson's President Ted McCarty.  The Flying V stopped production in 1959 due to its unpopularity but was reissued in 1967. By then people were into futuristic looks and the guitar design went with it.

The Flying V started out with a  guitar that was rounded in the back instead of being cut out. Gibson and Ted McCarty decided to change the back for weight reduction. The name supposedly has its origins in a comment that the guitar "looks like a flying letter V." Later they changed it to Korina for its then-fashionable blonde color.

Popular guitar players using the Flying Vs :  Bues rock guitarist Lonnie Mack, blues guitarist Albert King, Dave Davies and Jimi Hindrix.
